NEXT BLOG

I like to click the box at the top of my page that says "NEXT BLOG". I just clicked forward to the next 20 blogs and found 14 with gorgeous pictures of food and exotic recipes. I found 3 that had lovely pictures of gardens in back yards with park benches. I found 2 blogs from broken-hearted women who got their hearts crushed.

....and I just write about chickens.

Today I'm going to write about something of substance. I have had an anxious and heavy heart lately.

February 20, 2011 my beautiful Cousin Dana.....

...lost her 22 year-old daughter to a drunk driver. A 21 year-old man, was driving with a suspended license in an unregistered and uninsured car, 80+ mph on a 35 mph road and in his drunk and drugged-up state, t-boned and killed our beautiful Rachel Lynn Millhouse.

The drunk driver was charged with Vehicular Homicide and DUI charges. The scuttlebutt is that this is his 3rd DUI. WHAT!! The pain and suffering because of this man's actions will be on-going forever!
The cross designates the intersection in Missoula, Montana where Rachel died.

"Educate your children to self-control,
to the habit of holding passion and prejudice
and evil tendencies subject to an upright and reasoning will,
and you have done much to abolish miery from their future
and crimes from society."
---Benjamin Franklin
US author, diplomat, inventor, physicist, politician & printer (1706-1790)

To add an increased sadness to our family, Dana's mother, Janet N. Lee, who is also my Aunt passed away this week.
Aunt Janet Lee was a sweet lady with a laugh that twinkled.
Dana and her family have had so much to deal with in the past 3 months. It seems inconsequential to talk about my pain, but as a cousin and a niece, I am hurting. Praying gives me comfort, but I still cry when I'm talking to the Lord. My heart hurts for the pain of my family.

THEN my sister Lee......
Lee with her daughter Lindsey who was just crowned Prom-Queen
...was almost killed exactly 2 months to the day after Rachel was killed. She experienced a true miracle and for that, I am eternally grateful. She was also t-boned by a driver. We don't know why he ran the red light but his little pickup hit her Suburban so hard, that she spun around in circles and then flipped over on the hood.

Lee's Suburban.

She was wearing her seatbelt which saved her life as she dangled helplessly in that smashed vehicle. The many emergency responders cut her out of her vehicle. She is in excellent shape and I believe her very strong muscles kept her spine in place.

Phew, that was a lot of unloading. I think I'm going to go to the NEXT BLOG.

Coop deVille

The ADVENTURE BEGINS!! We left the local ranch-supply store the middle of March, with 5 chicks, heat lamps, feeders, waterers, pine shavings, and baby-chick feed. A week later we purchased 16 more chicks for a total of 21. The breeds we chose are Wyandotts, Delaware, White and Silver Leghorns, and Black Jersey Giants. They were so tiny, fragile and vulnerable. They lived in our dining room for 2 weeks until they drove us all nuts and they were moved to the garage. Matthew is making sure that Jinx, the cat, kept her distance. They are now a month old and have out-grown their box and another box had to be added. We are pitying their close quarters and something has to be done!
We've spent weeks pouring over books from the Library. We read about chickens and coop designs. We looked all over the Internet and found some fabulous sites!

http://www.mypetchicken.com/ This site gives great information on chickens

http://www.backyardchickens.com/ This site has about 450 coop designs.

Victor has gotten a brilliant idea and made a simple stand out of 2 x 4's with chicken-wire stapled to it. It is firm and is able to stand up by itself, creating a circle. We've put the pine shavings on the garage floor, hung the heat lamps, and now they are enjoying the added room. Victor even designed an A-framed Roost for them.

Victor bought some wood and adds it to a supply of barnwood that we were fortunate enough to be given. You can't see it in these pictures, but the wind is blowing bitterly.
March 25th.....
Well, it's now April 9th and it's snowing!! It will be another few weekends before the Coop deVille will be finished and the chicks can enjoy their new insulated home.

Winter in Montana lasts until June!!

Chicken Farming

I have a dream. A dream to raise enough egg-laying foul to furnish our family with nutritious eggs... and a little mad-money for Lori! I wonder what I will do with my "egg-money"?

I am wishing for the good ol' days when they had barn-raisin's with the neighbors.  We need to have a good ol' fashioned coop-raisin'.

A sweet woman my husband knows from work, gave us some chicken magazines. I had no idea there were magazines solely devoted to raising chickens... with multiple issues. What could they possibly have to write about? Perhaps they would write about the kinds of things I've been wanting to know, such as:

How big should we build the coop?

What do you feed chickens?

What is the difference between the kind of chickens you eat and the kind that lay eggs?

Which ones bite?

Do we need a ROOSTER for proper egg laying?

Where can I buy a rooster-muzzle?

Who babysits those feathered-foul when we go on our lavish vacations with all that egg-money?

10 Guilty Pleasures

I 've had a problem, lately, coming up with blog subjects. Mmmmmm, I say to myself, what shall I write about today? Tonight, I snooped around Blogland and found a topic I liked, "10 Guilty Pleasures". Must I find pleasures that I feel guilty about? I don't feel guilty about pleasures in my life... but perhaps I am supposed to. I believe that one must only feel guilty, about a pleasure they have indulged in, when they feel they don't deserve it.

Top 10 Pleasures List - Guilty or Not

1. Soaking in the Garden Tub. This is not a guilty pleasure. After years, okay, decades of pregnancy, I have deserved and enjoyed every tub-soaking of tired, haggard muscles I have ever had.
2. Rocking a Baby. Also, not a guilty pleasure. In looking back over my life and the times I have found true pleasure, rocking a baby has been a true delight.
3. Baking in the kitchen. The only guilt here might be the spontaneous spatula licking. I love a day in the kitchen. I start with a jello salad, then a sweet bread, then an entree and then end with a dessert.

4. Afternoons of Sewing. I sequester myself in my sewing room and can therefore ignore the dust that is settling on the furniture all over the house. Therefore, no guilting... just quilting.

5. Driving in the Car. This may seem like an odd one, but I just love a drive in the car, either alone or with Victor. I love the peace & quiet and the beauty of the countryside. It provides me with time to think. I don't feel a bit guilty about the use of gasoline as I feel it is cheaper than a Psychiatrist.
6. Watching Old Movies. I really love seeing a Jimmy Stewart or Gary Cooper movie for the first time. The 13th time is just as nice because I already know the dialogue line by line so I can quilt while listening.
7. Attending Parties & Dinners. I love to socialize. It's fun to get to know people and chat. I don't care much about the food served because I usually can't eat any of it, so I concentrate on the people around me. I do find it exasperating that I can't remember names of people I've met before, however, but my lack of memory is for another blog post.

8. Watching My Children Perform in Games/Concerts. Matthew played offensive tackle in 7th grade football this year. When he recovered a fumble I became hysterically embarassing and yelled as if he had just single-handedly won the Super Bowl.
9. Vacation!!! I love spending vacation time in every kind of way. Either traveling and visiting family or just staying at home quilting, gardening, baking and watching old movies.

10. DUH!! That's all I'm going to say about this one.

Thank You Chris!

Victor got the day off work today because in 1492 Columbus took a cruise across the Ocean Blue.I'm grateful that Christopher got the day off work to navigate his way to the Americas. I wonder if he used earned-time-off or called in sick with a note strapped to his carrier pigeon? I wonder what kind of job description an explorer would have? Anyway, I took the dayoff, also. The kids are still in school so we have had a nice day together.

We have recently joined the local health club. I have put on a few "happy-marriage pounds" and am not liking how my clothes are fitting. A trainer met us today, weighed us, and gave a great pep talk, which I needed because the scale weighed 8 pounds heavier than the one at home.

It was both our dog's day off as well. They danced with a skunk this morning and now the whole house stinks. I now know the recipe for getting SKUNK out of dog:

1/4 Cup Baking Soda
1 quart of Hydrogen Peroxide
1 teaspoon Dawn dishwashing liquid.
After the rain shower this morning, this day is looking beautiful!

Blue skies, no clouds and warm. I just love AUTUMN...... skunks and all.

The Boys of Fall

After 6 months at my new job, I have finally found time to blog. I'm learning how to squeeze ME time out of a day by taking it out of SLEEP time. Here goes... time to whine -

WHERE DID SUMMER GO??? I'm sure it was supposed to be here because the calendar said June, July and then August. It's just that it rained the whole, stinkin' time. The wind blew and the clouds were drab in all their glory. But the cu de gra, the REAL proof that summer never arrived to our hilltop is.... our zucchini plant never grew a single veggie! How is that possible?

We also planted 5 tomato plants and got 3 tomatoes. THREE!!!! That isn't even one per plant.

June never got warmer than 76 and rained everyday but 4. July never got warmer than 89 and rained everyday but 6. August, well, it rained at least alittle every day except 5 and averaged 80 degrees Fahrenheit for the whole month. Today... it snowed!!

So, AUTUMN has arrived. We celebrated the end of a very rainy summer by attending the first MSU football game. It was a gorgeous day.... and it, of course, rained alittle on us. The Cats played Fort Lewis Skyhawks and beat them 59 - 10. The first quarter was fabulous and there were some great plays I would have liked to see rewound. After that, it was same ol', same ol', SCORE, SCORE, SCORE!!! The Bobcats have a new quarterback and even though I'm not really a sports aficionado, I really will enjoy watching him play for the next 4 years.

I love Kenny Chesney's new song, The Boys of Fall. It's moving and helps me get into the spirit of Fall as I mourn the close of a very SHORT rainy summer.

Clint, Rachael & Meggie are in soccer, Stacey should be playing volleyball but she is struggling through Mononucleosis. She'll be lucky to attend school! And my little Matthew, well he'll be a 7th grade Boy of Fall. I can't wait to watch all the kids play this season.

Like a Good Neigh Bear

State Farm is there.....
I last wrote about 6 months ago. It's been forever! I haven't written because I've been soooo busy. I spent two months (Jan & Feb) job hunting. I haunted Job Service every week, took their typing tests (got 60 wpm-no errors) and data processing tests (got 100% - no errors). It was futile.

Then, MIRACULOUSLY, I got a job the 1st of March with State Farm Insurance as the Office Manager. In the end, it came word-of-mouth. The old saying, "it's who you know" paid off.

What a wonderful job! I work with great people. I really didn't think that insurance was up my alley but after 3 months I've found that I LOVE it. The end of April I went to Missoula to Insurance School, took my tests and .... passed! I now have my Property, Casualty and Sureties Producers License and can sell auto, bonds and homeowners policies.

I am so lucky. My office is only 2 blocks from Victor's bank. On breaks, I get to run down to visit him. It's also 4 blocks from the schools and the kids can come to my office after school. We have a conference room for the kids to do their homework in that also has a TV with a DVD player. It has a small kitchen so they can get snacks, too.

My job is very interesting. Especially when filing claims.

Actually, I haven't filed claims like this yet. Just fender benders and wind-blown roofs. I really don't want to do anything more serious.

The Lesson of the Fish Tank

We have a 40 gallon fish tank. Victor gave it to me for our First Year Anniversary last Spring. I love it. There are about 36 fish in it and they are very cool to watch. We have 4 Tiger Barbs, 3 red tails, 3 striped Danioes, 3 neon Danios, a whole bunch of neon tetras, and 2 large (3") Gourami, one is orange the other blue. They are the bullies of their world, picking on each other and anyone else that gets in their way. We also have 3 guppies, one is female, the others are male. One of the males was beautiful, with a bright decorative, wavy yellow tail. But he has been missing and Brooke and I were sure he was eaten. We couldn't find him for weeks. Then one morning we finally found him quivering and shaking under a shell. He stayed under there for another week, just eating whatever food floated near his hideout. We noticed that his beautiful tail is almost gone. Someone chewed on it! But he has persevered! Now, he is fine and brave and tough. He is swimming with the rest, even though his tail is bedraggled, and he is being bold because he healed and survived. By-the-way, the female guppy looks pregnant.

This next picture is of two of the UGLIEST fish in our tank. In the green stone is a large dark, algae eater. We have two of them and they have plenty of algae to eat so they are getting huge! In the front left you will see another ugly fish... a white catfish. He lives on the bottom of the tank, eating old rotting food that the other fish in the tank let pass them by. As ugly as these two breeds are, they are so necessary in keeping our tank clean. Is there another lesson here?Yes, it looks like Nemo is sitting on a rock... but that is just a fake statue in the tank to inspire all the other fish that they, too, could someday be a movie star!

Lunch Lady Lori

The new year has already brought changes for our family. I'm not working in the Metropolis over the pass as the weather/roads and time away from the family was too demanding. I am looking for work in town and I am happy with that. Before I find a formal job I am back to Substitute teaching.
I love children and I love teaching. I don't enjoy the public schools because they lack the environment for free thought and exploration. As a Substitute Teacher I may get a call each morning telling me where my assignment in the school district is for that day. I get up from bed never knowing where I will work or if I will work. Today I am working in the office of an elementary school and will bethe lunch lady.

My quote of the day:

It would
be so nice
if something would
make sense
for a change.

Welcome MMX

The year 2010 has arrived! And I have been blessed to see it arrive. I am sure there will be wonderful new inventions this year. Like the Pocket Gardener, the Butter Stick, the Portable Office.....

...the New and Improved Mouse Trap... ... and there's always the Keyboard Waffle Maker. And to think I am here to witness it all.

HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL!!

Christmas is Coming!

Do I start most of my posts this way, "IT'S BEEN AGES SINCE I'VE WRITTEN!!"? Well, it has. I have been so busy. What an amazing man my husband is. Victor makes my would-be logistical nightmare, so easy. I leave the house to drive the pass to the Metropolis (so that I can work at the hospital), before any of the kids are awake. He gets them up, makes sure they are presentable for school, feeds them breakfast and then takes them to the bus stop.

He comes home for lunch and pops yummy dinners into the crockpot so it will be ready when the 9 of us all hit the house at 5. The kids know their assigned chores and everyone works together... with a minimal of grumbling. We do pay them for many of their chores; it seems the incentive brings that grumbling to a minimum.
Preparing for Christmas has been awesome. The kids wrote lists, then we made lists of what we were actually going to get them, and shopped together. We went to the Ski Swap at the Fair Grounds and outfitted 4 of the children with ski and snowboard equipment.
It's amazing the cost of ski equipment, so to be able to save money and purchase used equipment is fantastic. Now, we just need LOTS of fresh powder on the ski hills.

We actually attended the National Annual Event called BLACK FRIDAY! We got up at 4:00 a.m. and arrived at WalMart at 5 a.m. With list in hand and a map handed to us at the door, we were able to squeeze through the bumper-to-bumper crowds and find our treatures. Kayleigh went with us and was a huge help! Being 18, she had insight to teen clothing tastes that we lacked. Then the three of us went to the Cat Eye Cafe for brunch. It was lovely. I love that place. I've placed a link to their website if you click on their name. Check out the icon "The Way". It's a scream and is on the back of their menu. I don't know if any other Bozemanite can remember what this cafe used to be. It's on 28 N. Tracy. I think it was the old Pizza Oven when we were kids. And you will notice in that picture... there is a line. It is ALWAYS there. There is always a line waiting to get in, no matter the weather.

Well, it's time to wrap all the gifts. I can't wait for Christmas. I wish ALL my children and their families could be with us this year. Some day it will happen. MERRY CHRISTMAS TO ALL and may God Bless you!
