10 Guilty Pleasures

I 've had a problem, lately, coming up with blog subjects. Mmmmmm, I say to myself, what shall I write about today? Tonight, I snooped around Blogland and found a topic I liked, "10 Guilty Pleasures". Must I find pleasures that I feel guilty about? I don't feel guilty about pleasures in my life... but perhaps I am supposed to. I believe that one must only feel guilty, about a pleasure they have indulged in, when they feel they don't deserve it.

Top 10 Pleasures List - Guilty or Not

1. Soaking in the Garden Tub. This is not a guilty pleasure. After years, okay, decades of pregnancy, I have deserved and enjoyed every tub-soaking of tired, haggard muscles I have ever had.
2. Rocking a Baby. Also, not a guilty pleasure. In looking back over my life and the times I have found true pleasure, rocking a baby has been a true delight.
3. Baking in the kitchen. The only guilt here might be the spontaneous spatula licking. I love a day in the kitchen. I start with a jello salad, then a sweet bread, then an entree and then end with a dessert.

4. Afternoons of Sewing. I sequester myself in my sewing room and can therefore ignore the dust that is settling on the furniture all over the house. Therefore, no guilting... just quilting.

5. Driving in the Car. This may seem like an odd one, but I just love a drive in the car, either alone or with Victor. I love the peace & quiet and the beauty of the countryside. It provides me with time to think. I don't feel a bit guilty about the use of gasoline as I feel it is cheaper than a Psychiatrist.
6. Watching Old Movies. I really love seeing a Jimmy Stewart or Gary Cooper movie for the first time. The 13th time is just as nice because I already know the dialogue line by line so I can quilt while listening.
7. Attending Parties & Dinners. I love to socialize. It's fun to get to know people and chat. I don't care much about the food served because I usually can't eat any of it, so I concentrate on the people around me. I do find it exasperating that I can't remember names of people I've met before, however, but my lack of memory is for another blog post.

8. Watching My Children Perform in Games/Concerts. Matthew played offensive tackle in 7th grade football this year. When he recovered a fumble I became hysterically embarassing and yelled as if he had just single-handedly won the Super Bowl.
9. Vacation!!! I love spending vacation time in every kind of way. Either traveling and visiting family or just staying at home quilting, gardening, baking and watching old movies.

10. DUH!! That's all I'm going to say about this one.

Thank You Chris!

Victor got the day off work today because in 1492 Columbus took a cruise across the Ocean Blue.I'm grateful that Christopher got the day off work to navigate his way to the Americas. I wonder if he used earned-time-off or called in sick with a note strapped to his carrier pigeon? I wonder what kind of job description an explorer would have? Anyway, I took the dayoff, also. The kids are still in school so we have had a nice day together.

We have recently joined the local health club. I have put on a few "happy-marriage pounds" and am not liking how my clothes are fitting. A trainer met us today, weighed us, and gave a great pep talk, which I needed because the scale weighed 8 pounds heavier than the one at home.

It was both our dog's day off as well. They danced with a skunk this morning and now the whole house stinks. I now know the recipe for getting SKUNK out of dog:

1/4 Cup Baking Soda
1 quart of Hydrogen Peroxide
1 teaspoon Dawn dishwashing liquid.
After the rain shower this morning, this day is looking beautiful!

Blue skies, no clouds and warm. I just love AUTUMN...... skunks and all.

The Boys of Fall

After 6 months at my new job, I have finally found time to blog. I'm learning how to squeeze ME time out of a day by taking it out of SLEEP time. Here goes... time to whine -

WHERE DID SUMMER GO??? I'm sure it was supposed to be here because the calendar said June, July and then August. It's just that it rained the whole, stinkin' time. The wind blew and the clouds were drab in all their glory. But the cu de gra, the REAL proof that summer never arrived to our hilltop is.... our zucchini plant never grew a single veggie! How is that possible?

We also planted 5 tomato plants and got 3 tomatoes. THREE!!!! That isn't even one per plant.

June never got warmer than 76 and rained everyday but 4. July never got warmer than 89 and rained everyday but 6. August, well, it rained at least alittle every day except 5 and averaged 80 degrees Fahrenheit for the whole month. Today... it snowed!!

So, AUTUMN has arrived. We celebrated the end of a very rainy summer by attending the first MSU football game. It was a gorgeous day.... and it, of course, rained alittle on us. The Cats played Fort Lewis Skyhawks and beat them 59 - 10. The first quarter was fabulous and there were some great plays I would have liked to see rewound. After that, it was same ol', same ol', SCORE, SCORE, SCORE!!! The Bobcats have a new quarterback and even though I'm not really a sports aficionado, I really will enjoy watching him play for the next 4 years.

I love Kenny Chesney's new song, The Boys of Fall. It's moving and helps me get into the spirit of Fall as I mourn the close of a very SHORT rainy summer.

Clint, Rachael & Meggie are in soccer, Stacey should be playing volleyball but she is struggling through Mononucleosis. She'll be lucky to attend school! And my little Matthew, well he'll be a 7th grade Boy of Fall. I can't wait to watch all the kids play this season.

Like a Good Neigh Bear

State Farm is there.....
I last wrote about 6 months ago. It's been forever! I haven't written because I've been soooo busy. I spent two months (Jan & Feb) job hunting. I haunted Job Service every week, took their typing tests (got 60 wpm-no errors) and data processing tests (got 100% - no errors). It was futile.

Then, MIRACULOUSLY, I got a job the 1st of March with State Farm Insurance as the Office Manager. In the end, it came word-of-mouth. The old saying, "it's who you know" paid off.

What a wonderful job! I work with great people. I really didn't think that insurance was up my alley but after 3 months I've found that I LOVE it. The end of April I went to Missoula to Insurance School, took my tests and .... passed! I now have my Property, Casualty and Sureties Producers License and can sell auto, bonds and homeowners policies.

I am so lucky. My office is only 2 blocks from Victor's bank. On breaks, I get to run down to visit him. It's also 4 blocks from the schools and the kids can come to my office after school. We have a conference room for the kids to do their homework in that also has a TV with a DVD player. It has a small kitchen so they can get snacks, too.

My job is very interesting. Especially when filing claims.

Actually, I haven't filed claims like this yet. Just fender benders and wind-blown roofs. I really don't want to do anything more serious.

The Lesson of the Fish Tank

We have a 40 gallon fish tank. Victor gave it to me for our First Year Anniversary last Spring. I love it. There are about 36 fish in it and they are very cool to watch. We have 4 Tiger Barbs, 3 red tails, 3 striped Danioes, 3 neon Danios, a whole bunch of neon tetras, and 2 large (3") Gourami, one is orange the other blue. They are the bullies of their world, picking on each other and anyone else that gets in their way. We also have 3 guppies, one is female, the others are male. One of the males was beautiful, with a bright decorative, wavy yellow tail. But he has been missing and Brooke and I were sure he was eaten. We couldn't find him for weeks. Then one morning we finally found him quivering and shaking under a shell. He stayed under there for another week, just eating whatever food floated near his hideout. We noticed that his beautiful tail is almost gone. Someone chewed on it! But he has persevered! Now, he is fine and brave and tough. He is swimming with the rest, even though his tail is bedraggled, and he is being bold because he healed and survived. By-the-way, the female guppy looks pregnant.

This next picture is of two of the UGLIEST fish in our tank. In the green stone is a large dark, algae eater. We have two of them and they have plenty of algae to eat so they are getting huge! In the front left you will see another ugly fish... a white catfish. He lives on the bottom of the tank, eating old rotting food that the other fish in the tank let pass them by. As ugly as these two breeds are, they are so necessary in keeping our tank clean. Is there another lesson here?Yes, it looks like Nemo is sitting on a rock... but that is just a fake statue in the tank to inspire all the other fish that they, too, could someday be a movie star!

Lunch Lady Lori

The new year has already brought changes for our family. I'm not working in the Metropolis over the pass as the weather/roads and time away from the family was too demanding. I am looking for work in town and I am happy with that. Before I find a formal job I am back to Substitute teaching.
I love children and I love teaching. I don't enjoy the public schools because they lack the environment for free thought and exploration. As a Substitute Teacher I may get a call each morning telling me where my assignment in the school district is for that day. I get up from bed never knowing where I will work or if I will work. Today I am working in the office of an elementary school and will bethe lunch lady.

My quote of the day:

It would
be so nice
if something would
make sense
for a change.
